Book Icon - In this tutorial i will tech you how to create a closed book icon.
Introduction: In this tutorial I will teach you how to create a close book icon. I saw this image on the web and decided I will try and recreate it.  If you are having problems feel free to e-mail us, or post a message on the forum.

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to create the book above.

Step1: Setting up work space.

Create a new image using the dimension  800 x 600. Set the background color to white. Create a new layer, Layer New Layer... (Shift+Ctrl+N). Name this layer Front Cover

Step2: Creating the book cover.

Click on the Rounded Rectangle , using the setting shown

Create the shape shown below.

 

Hold Ctrl and click on the Front Cover layer which will select it as shown below.

Using the Rectangle Marquee Tool and the setting shown

Subtract from the selection to get the effect below.

 

Step3: Creating the books binding.

Create a new layer, Layer New Layer... (Shift+Ctrl+N). Name this layer Binding. Using the paint bucket fill your selection with the color shown #2b2b2b

 

Create a new layer, you can call this layer Line1. Click on the Line Tool using the setting below

Draw a line using this color #3e3e3e. Create another layer and draw a second line using this color #545454. Position the lines to get the effect shown below.

Zoom into your image, using the Pen Tool create the path shown below

 

After closing the path off, right click on the path using the pen tool and select Make Selection

With the selection still selected, hold Ctrl and click next to the layer name on all the layers except the background layer and Merge these layers using Ctrl+E. Now you should have two layers the background and the merged layers. The Selection should still be active, now press the delete key to get the effect below.

Step4: Creating the books back cover and papers.

Duplicate the book cover layer you can rename the layers front and back covers. Hide the front cover. Create a new layer, Layer New Layer... (Shift+Ctrl+N). Name this layer paper1. At this point we will create the paper inside the book. Place the paper layer in between the two cover layers. Click on the paper layer, select the Rounded Rectangle , change the foreground color to white. Using the setting shown

Create and position shape shown below.

Create a new layer, above the paper1 layer. Name this layer paper2, change the foreground color to #bdbdbb and create the rounded rectangle show below above the white paper.

Select the Back Cover layer, Using the Chop Tool right click on the image and select Free Transform.

Click on the middle handle and move it to the left

Doing this until you get the effect below.

Right click on the layer, select Blending Option and add the setting shown below.

Drop Shadow

Click ok.

Unhide the front cover layer and you should have the effect below.

Step5: Adding light reflection.

Hold Ctrl and click on the books front cover layer, this will select the cover. Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool  and the setting shown below

Subtract from your selection until the get the effect below.

Create a new layer above the front cover, fill this layer using the Paint Bucket with this color #549dd9.  By doing that you will have the effect below.

Step6: Adding the books tab.

Create a new layer above the paper layer. Name this layer tabs, Click on the Rounded Rectangle , using the setting shown

create the tab below using this color #d9d9d9

Right click on the tab layer, select Blending Option and add the setting shown below.

Now position and duplicate the tabs to get the effect below.

To rotate the book, you will have to merge all the layers except the background together. Hold Ctrl and click next to the layer name to select it. When you have all the layers highlighted press Ctrl+E to merge them. Next, Using the Chop Tool right click on the image and select Free Transform. Here you can rotate and shrink it down.

News Update [10/16/07]
Yesterday on the 15th of October my gallery went down for some unknown reason. I was able to get the backup of the images, i just lost all the users. The gallery was not that active but i am sill pissed about what happened. I am in the process of reloading the gallery.
