First click and copy and paste the image above into Photoshop. This is the image I will be using for this tutorial. You should have two layers, one is the background and the other the image as shown below.
With the image layer selected press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer, so you will have two images. Click on the eye to hide the original layer. Select the Quick Selection Tool this tool is only available in Photoshop CS3. After selecting the tool, add the settings shown below.
Now, using the tool click on the object you want to mask out. Click, hold and drag to select the image.
With the object selected, click on the Refine button show
When you click on Refine Edge you will see the window below.
Set your setting according to the image and click ok. Hold Ctrl+Shift and I, this will select the inverse. In doing that press Delete on your keyboard.
You can also cut out complicated images. As shown below.
Click on the image below and paste it into Photoshop.
With the image in Photoshop, duplicate it 4 times. Hold Ctrl and click on the first layer as shown below to select it.
Select the Quick Selection Tool using the setting below
click and drag around your image, it will take a little time but try to get it as close as possible to cut out. You can also use the Lasso Tool , with the setting below.
In doing that below is what I came up with, It does not have to be a perfect cutout.
With the object selected, click on the Refine button show
When you click on Refine Edge you will see the window below.
Hold Ctrl+Shift and I, this will select the inverse. In doing that press Delete on your keyboard.
Click on the eye to hide all the other layers. Click on the Eraser Tool with the setting below.
and start erasing around your image.
You are finished.
